Father's day

Today is Father's Day.  My dad is 86 years old.  He has always been a hardworking independent person. We all respect him. He never had it easy.  Both of his parents were killed in an auto accident when he was 18.  He was the oldest of 7 children and had a lot put on his shoulders at a very young age.

I always wanted to have a closer relationship with my Dad.  Even today, giving him a phone call to wish him a Happy Father's Day our conversation is short and seems awkward to me. After a few minutes of me trying to make small talk with him, he passes the phone off to my mom.  I tell him I love him, and then my mom is on the phone.  It's not not that he doesn't care. I know in his way, he does. He just has never taken the time to really get to know me, or my kids, and that makes me sad.
